OpenAI doubles usage limits on higher ChatGPT Pro tiers and cancels a planned cut
OpenAI raised limits for Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium, but Plus users got nothing and the doubling is narrower than it sounds.
The short version
- OpenAI's Tibo announced higher limits for Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium, effective immediately.
- The doubling covers Work and Codex limits, not weekly GPT-6 Pro chat messages, which stay the same.
- A planned cut to Pro 200 Work and Codex limits, emailed on September 29, is cancelled.
- Existing subscribers get the new limits automatically, with no wait for the next billing cycle.
- ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) limits are unchanged, which has annoyed some Plus users.
Why it matters
If you pay for a top ChatGPT tier and lean on coding or task-running tools, you may be able to do more at the same price. The change is uneven across plans and features, so the headline 'doubled' can mislead. It also shows that how much you get for your subscription can change quickly.
What OpenAI announced
As ifanr reported, OpenAI product lead Tibo announced that usage limits are going up for ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium. The change takes effect immediately, and some plans see their allowance double.
OpenAI also said it listened to feedback and will not cut Work and Codex limits on Pro 200. Codex is OpenAI's tool for writing code, and Work is the feature that carries out tasks for you.
Who gets what
The details differ by plan, according to OpenAI's help page as ifanr read it.
- Pro 100 ($100 a month): Work and Codex limits go to twice the previous level.
- Pro 200 ($200 a month): users with lower limits are doubled, users with higher limits keep what they had, and everyone ends up at the same level.
- Pro 500 ($500 a month): Work and Codex limits double, and these users can use the Ultrafast mode of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- Business Premium: Tibo said limits double, but the help page gives no figures.
Chat is excluded. The weekly message cap for GPT-6 Pro in the chat window stays where it was. Twice the limit also does not mean twice the finished work, since model choice, context length, reasoning settings and tool use all affect how fast you use up an allowance.
A reversal, and the end of resets?
On September 29, OpenAI emailed some Pro 200 users that their Work and Codex limits would be lowered. They would have kept paying the same fee for less. That plan is now cancelled, so for long-time Pro 200 users this is mostly a cut that never happened.
Tibo joked that OpenAI has moved from being a company that keeps resetting limits to one that provides tokens, the small units of text AI models process. Tibo had become known for occasionally resetting users' allowances for free. ifanr reads the joke as a sign those resets may be over. That is the outlet's interpretation, not a confirmed policy.
Plus users feel left out
ChatGPT Plus, at $20 a month, is unchanged. One user asked Tibo in the replies why Plus users seem not to count, and complained that the five-hour usage limit remains.
ifanr's broader point is that rules keep shifting and different features are measured differently. That makes it hard for paying users to know what they are buying.
What to watch
- Whether OpenAI publishes the actual Business Premium limits.
- Whether free limit resets really stop, or are just rarer.
- Whether Plus users get any limit increase.
Try it
Note for a week how often you hit a usage limit and on which tasks, then compare that with the limits listed on OpenAI's Pro tiers help page before changing plans.
