iOS 27.2 gives Siri a longer memory and patches 329 security flaws
Apple's latest iPhone update adds Siri AI memory and privacy controls and fixes 329 vulnerabilities across its devices, so it is worth installing.
The short version
- Siri AI can now recall answers it gave you in earlier conversations.
- A new Excluded Apps setting lets you choose which apps Siri AI can see.
- Siri AI adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, but not in China or the EU.
- Apple fixed 329 vulnerabilities across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, visionOS and more.
- More than 160 of the fixes are on iPhone, including an Apple Intelligence data-access flaw.
Why it matters
Most people see an update as a nag, but this one does two jobs. It makes Siri more useful if you own a recent iPhone, and it closes holes that could expose your camera, email address or private data. Installing it is the simplest step you can take today.
What Apple shipped
Apple has released iOS 27.2 for eligible iPhones, as Digit on MSN reported. The headline items are a redesigned Apple Music and a set of upgrades to Siri AI, Apple's AI-powered voice assistant. The report describes the rollout for users in India.
The Siri changes apply to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and every iPhone 16 model and later. If you own an older phone, you will get other parts of the update but not these Siri features.
A Siri that remembers and searches more
According to Apple's changelog (its list of what changed), Siri can now bring back information from past conversations. If it gave you an answer last week, you can ask it to recall that answer.
Siri can also look through more of your own material. That now includes photos attached in Messages, the people invited to Calendar events, your voicemails, and it gives better results from Safari history and your Reading List.
More reach raises an obvious privacy question, and Apple adds a control for it. Excluded Apps lets you pick which apps the AI experience may access, all from one setting. A smaller addition is finer text selection, so you can copy just part of one of Siri's replies.
Siri AI also reaches more languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. The expansion will not be available in China or the European Union.
The smaller changes
The update bundles a long list of minor tweaks:
- Suggested quick replies in Messages
- Changes to Shared Albums in Photos
- SynthID watermarking for AI output, a hidden marker that helps identify AI-generated content
- Separate New Episodes and Continue Playing sections in Podcasts
- Recent-game and contextual friend suggestions in the Games app
- FaceTime Dual Capture in group calls
Apple TV and FaceTime also get changes. The redesigned Apple Music icon and interface are rolling out with this version too.
The security fixes matter most
Apple fixed 329 vulnerabilities across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, visionOS and other products. A vulnerability is a flaw in software that an attacker could exploit. More than 160 of the fixes are in iOS 27.2 itself.
Several stand out. One is a flaw in Apple Intelligence that could let attackers reach sensitive data remotely. Another could leak a user's email ID. The update also covers 30 WebKit issues, which could let a malicious website run its own code on your device. WebKit is the engine that displays web pages. There are around 15 kernel fixes as well, which touch the core of the operating system.
Other repairs are more personal. A CoreMedia flaw, noted by 9to5Mac, could have let a malicious app use an Apple device's camera without permission. A macOS Tahoe flaw in Siri could have let apps reach sensitive information. The report adds that most of the weaknesses used to jailbreak the iPhone Duo were also fixed. Jailbreaking means stripping away Apple's built-in restrictions.
What to do with it
The pairing is notable. As assistants get access to more of your messages, voicemails and history, the cost of a flaw in them goes up. This update ships a more capable Siri, a control to limit what it sees, and a patch for an Apple Intelligence data-access bug together.
The practical advice is simple: update, then look at what Siri can reach. If there are apps you would rather keep out of its view, the Excluded Apps setting is there for that.
What to watch
- Whether Siri AI's new languages ever reach China and the European Union.
- How the Excluded Apps setting works in daily use and how many people turn it on.
- Whether attackers target the Apple Intelligence and WebKit flaws on devices that stay un-updated.
Try it
After updating, try Siri with a longer, two-part request, then ask it to recall an earlier answer. Also check Excluded Apps to choose what Siri can see. This needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
