Google updates ChromeOS 156 with Gemini dictation and video summaries

Google's latest stable ChromeOS adds Gemini dictation for any web text box, plus video summaries on Chromebook Plus, along with 353 browser security fixes.

353security fixes inherited from the Chrome 156 browser

The short version

Why it matters

If you use a Chromebook, speaking a first draft or getting a quick digest of a long lecture is now built into the system. But what you get depends on your hardware and your account. Update soon, because the release also carries a large batch of security patches.

What Google shipped

Google has promoted ChromeOS 156 to its Stable channel, the version most people receive, according to the Chrome Releases blog. As gHacks reported, the update brings Gemini-powered voice dictation, plus the ability to ask Gemini questions about video and audio on Chromebook Plus models. It also folds in the security fixes from the Chrome 156 browser.

The version number looks odd for a reason: there was no ChromeOS 155. Google sped up the Chrome browser to a two-week release rhythm but kept ChromeOS on a four-week one. Starting with version 154, ChromeOS therefore skips every odd number so it stays in step with the browser it ships.

Talk to Type and video questions

Talk to Type is the main new feature. You speak, and Gemini types into whatever text field you have open on a website, or into Gemini in Chrome itself. It does more than transcribe: it tidies the wording, drops filler words such as "um", and copes when you correct yourself halfway through a sentence.

Google is turning it on gradually from its own servers, so the feature depends on your account and region. You might finish the update and still not see it for a while.

The second headline feature is Gemini media understanding, limited to Chromebook Plus. It can answer questions about audio or video that has already played in a browser tab. It can also summarize something long, like a tutorial or a webinar. The article gives no price, and says nothing about whether standard Chromebooks will ever get these features.

Smaller changes, including passwords

Several other additions arrive through Gemini in Chrome:

The most sensitive change involves an agent called Gemini Spark. You can let it temporarily use logins saved in Google Password Manager so it can sign in to third-party web apps for you. Google requires your explicit consent, and a fingerprint or device unlock, every time it does a task. That per-task check matters, because it keeps the agent from holding open-ended access to your accounts.

Security fixes and what admins get

ChromeOS 156 includes all 353 security fixes from the Chrome 156 browser. Six are rated critical and involve memory corruption, a class of bug where a program mishandles its working memory, which attackers can sometimes exploit. ChromeOS also gets two high-severity fixes for the Mali graphics chip's low-level code. One of them covers boards using the MediaTek MT8196 chip.

The release also brings in two protections Google recently added to Chrome. One is a default permission prompt before connecting to sites over insecure HTTP. The other is Gemini-based ClickFix scam protection, part of Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode.

For IT administrators, the update finalizes limits on websites probing devices on a local network. It also retires some older autofill policies and improves how the browser's back and forward buttons behave on pages with active live connections known as WebSockets.

What is still unclear

Documentation is thin. Google's ChromeOS release notes hub has not been updated beyond version 154, and no consumer changelog has appeared yet on the Chromebook Community forums. That means changes specific to individual Chromebook models are not written down anywhere public. The feature list here comes from the Chrome Enterprise release notes and Google's What's New in Chrome page.

Treat the Gemini summaries with care. They are a convenient way to get through a long video, but check anything important, such as dates, figures or step-by-step instructions, against the original.
