Gemini Notebook can now be used from inside your Gemini chats
Google has made Gemini Notebook a Connected App, so you can create, search and update notebooks by typing in a normal Gemini conversation.
The short version
- Gemini Notebook is now a Connected App, like Google Workspace or Photos, called with @Gemini Notebook.
- You can create, edit or delete notebooks, and add, update or delete their sources.
- You can list notebooks and sources, or ask questions answered from a notebook's contents.
- On by default globally, but OFF by default in the European Economic Area.
- Open to Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts.
Why it matters
If you keep research or study notes in Gemini Notebooks, you no longer have to leave your chat to find or update them. The same chat can now read and change your notebooks, so it is worth knowing what you have given it access to.
What Google added
Gemini Notebooks already live in a side panel of the Gemini app. As 9to5Google reported, Google is now also making Gemini Notebook a Connected App, which is a service the Gemini app can reach into while you chat, the same way it does with Google Workspace or Photos.
In practice, you can type @Gemini Notebook in a conversation and manage your notebooks there, using ordinary sentences instead of menus. You do not have to leave the chat to find or update your material.
What you can ask it to do
The report describes four kinds of jobs:
- Create, edit or delete a notebook, such as one about solar farm market trends.
- Add, update or delete sources, for example saving a copy of a chat into a notebook for a Bio 101 course.
- List notebooks and the sources inside them, such as a notebook about US National Parks.
- Answer questions from a notebook's contents, like what your notes say about butterfly migration.
The Gemini app is also meant to work out on its own when a prompt calls for the notebook, so you may not always need to name it.
Who gets it, and where
The feature is available now. It is switched on by default for users around the world, with one exception: in the European Economic Area it starts off, so people there would need to turn it on themselves.
Google says it is open to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and people with personal Google accounts.
A sensible way to start
Because the connection lets Gemini read and change your notebooks, it is worth starting small. Try it with one notebook of non-sensitive material, and see what Gemini can and cannot pull out of it before you rely on it.
Deleting notebooks and sources is among the listed actions, so read your request carefully before you send commands that remove things.
What to watch
- Whether Google turns the feature on by default in the European Economic Area later.
- How well Gemini decides, without being told, when a prompt needs your notebook.
Try it
Open a Gemini chat, type @Gemini Notebook, and ask it to list the sources in one low-stakes notebook. Check that the answer matches what you see in the side panel.
