Figma lets outside AI coding agents edit design files directly

At Config India, Figma added 20 partners to its open agent connection, betting that being the place every AI works beats building its own model, unlike Canva.

20new partners added to Figma's MCP server

The short version

Why it matters

Design files are turning into something software agents can work inside, not just a picture a developer copies by hand. If you build, buy or commission websites and apps, that could shorten the path from mockup to working page. It also shows a split in how design platforms expect AI to fit in: open to everyone's agents, or closed around one.

What Figma announced

As Startup Fortune reported, Figma used its Config India event in Bengaluru on October 15, 2026 to add 20 new partners to its Model Context Protocol server. MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an outside AI agent connect to a tool and work inside it. In this case the tool is a Figma design file.

The newcomers include project and note-taking products such as Linear, ClickUp and Notion, the AI company Mistral, and JetBrains' coding assistant Junie. Figma had opened a narrower version of this in March, with five partners focused on turning code into editable shapes on the canvas. The October move widens that idea considerably.

What an agent can actually do now

Until recently, a developer handed a design usually got a flat image and had to guess at spacing and styling. With the MCP connection, a coding agent can ask the file directly for its layout, text styles, color settings and how its components are built. It can then write changes back into the same file, not just read from it.

Figma's help pages name Claude Code and Cursor among the supported tools, along with several other code editors and assistants. The practical difference is that an agent works from the real rules in the file, such as how elements resize and which component variants exist, rather than from a screenshot.

That is the reason the report treats this as more than a small feature. If the design file becomes a shared workspace for people and agents, the company that hosts the file sits in a powerful spot.

A CEO-level caveat about the plumbing

Co-founder Dylan Field was candid about the technology underneath. He posted on X that MCP is "not a perfect protocol". His specific complaint was that Anthropic, the company that created the standard, does not expose artifacts and other cloud resources made through MCP calls. In his view, that leaves problems with sharing context between tools unsolved.

In plain terms, an agent and a design tool may not always see the same things at the same time. Shipping a bet while naming its weak points is unusual, and it suggests Figma is committing to the direction, not to every detail of the standard.

Canva chose the opposite road

The title of the report frames this as an answer to Canva. On April 16, 2026, at Canva Create in Los Angeles, chief operating officer Cliff Obrecht described a shift: Canva would stop treating AI as an add-on to a design product and instead build an AI product with design tools inside it. The company launched Canva AI 2.0, powered by its own model, the Canva Design Model, which is meant to grasp how a design is organized.

A user can type a request such as a 12-page pitch deck and get editable vector shapes back, not a flattened picture. TechCrunch reported that the assistant can chain several internal tools to assemble a design. The product also remembers a brand's style and fonts, and connects to Gmail, Slack, Drive and Zoom to turn a transcript or email thread into a formatted report. Obrecht called it the biggest overhaul since the company's 2013 launch, and TechRadar reported it took about two years.

So Canva built a closed system around its own intelligence, while Figma left the canvas open for anyone's agent to enter.

Why the money picture matters

The two companies are not equals. Canva has roughly $4 billion in annual recurring revenue and a private valuation near $60 billion. Figma priced its July 2025 IPO at $33 a share, reached a market value near $70 billion on day one, and was trading around $27 a share, or roughly $14 billion, by late August 2026, according to Stockanalysis.com.

Figma's business is still growing. It reported first-quarter revenue of $333.4 million, up 46% from a year earlier, and raised its 2026 revenue outlook. The report says early use of AI credits and MCP suggests AI may be widening Figma's platform rather than replacing it.

For founders, the choice is practical: build for Canva's closed, memory-aware assistant, or build an agent that talks to Figma's open canvas. The report's warning is that picking wrong could mean rebuilding integrations within months. It also argues that templates are no longer the main product; an agent that can hold a brand's layout rules and act on them is.

What to watch

Try it

If you work with a designer or developer, ask whether they use Figma and whether their coding assistant is on Figma's list of supported MCP tools. Then ask who reviews changes an agent makes to a design file.
