Clarivate integrates CompuMark trademark data into Microsoft Copilot

Intellectual property professionals can now use natural language to query trademark databases directly within Microsoft Copilot workflows.

The short version

Why it matters

This move shifts trademark research from manual database searching to conversational AI workflows. It allows legal and brand teams to get faster answers on potential conflicts without leaving their primary work environment.

Bridging data and AI

Clarivate announced on November 2, 2026, that it is bringing its CompuMark trademark data into Microsoft Copilot. This integration happens through IPOne, which serves as Clarivate's intelligence platform for intellectual property (IP) decisions. The goal is to give professionals natural-language access to trademark insights within the tools they already use daily.

By connecting proprietary data with AI, the company aims to help organizations make more informed decisions about their intellectual property. Simon Webster, president of intellectual property at Clarivate, noted that this is a major step in bringing trusted intelligence directly into professional environments. The partnership allows for the application of trademark intelligence through purpose-built AI agents.

The IPOne platform was originally introduced in May 2026 as a unified system for IP decisions. It combines various data types, including patent, litigation, and industrial design records. It was developed in collaboration with leading law firms and corporate IP teams from 15 Fortune 500 companies. The platform is built to support tasks like discovery, clearance, prioritization, monitoring, analysis, and decision support across the entire IP lifecycle.

How the technology works

The connection relies on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This is a shared set of rules that lets AI software link to outside data sources and services in a secure way. By using MCP connectors, organizations can embed specific IP intelligence inside their enterprise large language model platforms.

The IPOne Trademark MCP product page explains that this connector works with several major AI environments. In addition to Microsoft Copilot, the data can be accessed through OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. This setup allows for use cases like trademark preliminary screening, monitoring, and competitive landscape analysis.

Chantrelle Nielsen, a Microsoft product manager, noted that this setup provides new methods for IP experts to find necessary information using natural language. Specifically, the Copilot agent is designed to run first-pass trademark knockout searches. It collects relevant Nice classes and registration offices, then searches both the CompuMark records and the public web. It identifies potential conflicts, assesses commercial use, and produces a structured risk report that includes source links.

Data scale and accuracy

The CompuMark database is a massive repository of trademark information. It covers more than 168 million trademark records across 188 databases globally. It also includes more than 2.3 million common law records and over 500 million business names.

To ensure the quality of this data, Clarivate employs a team of more than 170 professional analysts. These experts enhance and error-correct 29.7% of the records. The system also indexes more than 13,000 new trademarks every single day to keep the information current.

Access to these specific connectors requires a valid CompuMark subscription. Clarivate emphasizes that this new AI-driven connector is intended to complement, rather than replace, the existing CompuMark tools. It provides a different way to interact with the same authoritative data source.

Security and data handling

Microsoft’s Marketplace listing provides specific details on how the agent handles sensitive information. The agent is triggered using the Microsoft 365 Copilot declarative agent framework. It communicates with a Clarivate-hosted MCP endpoint instead of using Microsoft-hosted services for the data processing.

The system processes user prompts and trademark name inputs, which might contain private business information or proposed marks. Clarivate retains requests and logs for audit and support purposes. All data is stored in the United States, with a retention period extending more than 90 days after an account is terminated.

Clarivate reports that the app is ISO 27001 certified, which is a standard for information security management. The company states that it does not share customer data with any outside parties or sub-processors. This structure is designed to allow enterprise users to utilize AI while maintaining control over their proprietary information.
