ChatGPT apps now let you keep a work and a personal account signed in together

OpenAI is rolling out account switching on phones, with separate chats, memory and billing. It helps if you use ChatGPT at work and at home.

2ChatGPT accounts you can stay signed in to at once

The short version

Why it matters

If you use ChatGPT for a job and for personal things, you no longer have to sign out and back in to move between them. But the extra ease removes a small barrier that used to stop mix-ups, so checking which account you are in becomes your job.

What OpenAI changed

OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes for October 30, 2026 say the company is slowly rolling out account switching in its iPhone and Android apps. You can keep two accounts signed in at the same time and move between them without logging out, as note reported.

The obvious use is a person who has a ChatGPT Business account through their employer and a personal account at home. Until now, moving between the two meant signing out and signing in again. That chore is what this update removes.

The feature is not limited to phones. OpenAI's help pages say it also works on the web version of ChatGPT. On the web it is described as available on all plans, though a company that manages a workspace (a shared space run by an organization) may decide whether to allow it.

How adding and switching works

On a phone, you open Settings, choose Switch account, pick Add account, and log in with the second account. Because the rollout is gradual, you may not see the Switch account option yet. That likely means it has not reached you.

On the web, you add an account from the account menu. You can log in with an existing account or create a new one. A newly created second account starts on the free plan.

Only two accounts can be signed in at once. If you want a third, you have to log out of one of the first two. When you log out on mobile, that account disappears from the switching list. If you log out of the one you are currently using, the other opens. Logging out of the last one takes you back to the login screen.

Notifications may also come from both accounts, depending on your settings and your phone's permissions. Tapping one from the inactive account switches you to that account and opens the content.

What stays walled off

OpenAI's help page is clear that switching does not blend the accounts. Chats do not move across. Memory, meaning the details ChatGPT keeps about you, is not shared. Files, uploads and settings stay with their own account too.

Billing stays separate as well. A paid plan belongs to the account that bought it, so it does not extend to your other account. If you want a paid plan on the second account, you need a separate contract.

The help page suggests checking your current contract before you buy, to avoid paying twice. If you paid but cannot use the plan, check which account holds the contract before buying again.

One side effect is that any background you gave one account will not carry over. You would need to set it up again on the other.

Company accounts keep company rules

The most important caveat is for work accounts. OpenAI's help pages say that data in company-managed accounts stays under the organization's control, even if you are also signed in to a personal account. These accounts include Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, Business and Teachers accounts.

Depending on the organization's settings and the law, administrators may be able to view, export, audit, keep and delete that data. It can include prompts, uploaded files, generated results, conversation history and usage records such as login logs and device information. Administrators can also limit features or suspend an account.

There is a second catch. An account you thought of as personal could later come under company management if the organization verifies or claims its domain, which is the part of an email address after the @ sign. Be especially careful with a personal account created with a work email address.

Finally, account switching is different from workspace switching. Account switching changes which ChatGPT account you are using. Workspace switching moves you between workspaces inside one account. OpenAI also says it can apply its usage policies to all accounts linked through switching.

A new habit to build

The source article adds its own analysis here. When switching takes one tap, it becomes easier to paste a work document into the wrong account. The old hassle of logging in again acted as a natural checkpoint. Now you are the checkpoint.

OpenAI's own advice points the same way: look at which account is active before you start a conversation or buy anything. Use the company account for work matters and the personal account for personal ones. The reverse risk is real too, since personal topics typed into a work account may be visible to administrators.

Whether you may handle work information in a personal account depends on your employer's rules. If the policy is silent, the source suggests asking your IT department.

What to watch

Try it

Open ChatGPT on your phone and look for Settings, then Switch account. If you use a work account, check your company's AI policy before adding a personal one.
