Anthropic adds monthly credits for Claude Agent SDK usage

Anthropic is introducing a new credit system for production teams using the Claude Agent SDK, though subscription limits still apply.

$500maximum pooled credits for Team plans

The short version

Why it matters

For developers, this means production automation is no longer a 'free' byproduct of a subscription. It forces teams to carefully manage how they route tasks between cheap subscription limits and more expensive API-style credits.

A shift in the credit model

Anthropic recently announced a new monthly credit system for users of the Claude Agent SDK and the claude -p command. This move aims to provide more clarity for builders who run production automation and CI pipelines using Anthropic's models. The new system applies to Claude Max and Team subscriptions, specifically covering the Agent SDK and Managed Agents when using a linked organization API key.

The rollout follows a period of uncertainty regarding how Anthropic would handle these specific workloads. In May, the company initially planned to move Agent SDK usage entirely out of normal subscription limits. However, Anthropic pulled that plan on the day it was scheduled to launch in June, leading to a different arrangement than what was first promised.

The current model is an addition rather than a replacement of existing limits. As Startup Fortune reported, users can still run the Agent SDK against their ordinary subscription limits. The new API credits sit alongside these limits as an optional path for organizations that need to manage high-volume production tasks.

How the credits are distributed

The specific dollar amounts provided depend on the tier of the subscription. Subscribers to the Max 5x plan will receive $100 in monthly credits, while those on the Max 20x plan will receive $200. These credits are intended to help cover the costs of running agentic workflows that might otherwise exceed standard usage.

For organizations using Team plans, the credit structure becomes a pooled system. Standard seats contribute $20 and Premium seats contribute $100 to a shared bucket. This organization-wide pool is capped at a maximum of $500, which helps teams coordinate their spending across different projects and members.

There are specific restrictions on how these credits can be combined. Individual Max subscriptions cannot pool their credits into a single bucket; each can only link to one Console organization. This means five Max 20x subscriptions cannot be combined to create a $1,000 pool, a detail that is critical for large-scale planning.

The economics of the SDK

The reason for this new credit system involves the significant cost difference between subscription usage and direct API calls. Previously, some teams routed jobs through personal subscriptions because the cost was significantly lower than the equivalent API rates. Anthropic's initial proposal would have billed these tasks at full API prices, which was much more expensive.

By keeping the subscription limits in place while adding a credit system, Anthropic has deferred the full cost impact for many users. However, the gap between the subsidized subscription cost and the full API cost remains a concern for developers. This means that while the change is less drastic than originally planned, the underlying economics of running large-scale agents remain a factor.

When a team chooses to use the API key from a linked Console organization, the requests will draw from the monthly credit balance first. Once that balance is exhausted, the requests will stop entirely. To prevent service interruptions, organizations must either purchase additional credits, enable an auto-reload feature, or be invoiced for extra usage.

Operational hurdles for teams

Small teams and large organizations will need to navigate several technical requirements to utilize these credits. Claiming the credits requires linking a Claude Console organization to the specific subscription. The Agent SDK or claude -p commands will only use the credit balance when they are authenticated with a key from that linked organization.

To maintain control over costs, Anthropic is providing tools for Team owners to manage spending. These owners can set workspace spending limits to monitor how much individual teammates or specific projects consume from the pooled credits. This is designed to prevent a single project from draining the $500 bucket too quickly.

The complexity of these rules suggests that developers should be cautious about how they architect their pipelines. Because the credits are not a forced migration, teams must decide which tasks are best suited for the
