ADNOC becomes first energy firm to deploy OpenAI Frontier

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. is partnering with OpenAI to use AI agents for integrated decision-making across its entire energy value chain.

200AI applications currently in ADNOC's strategy

The short version

Why it matters

This marks a shift from using AI for isolated tasks to using it for 'decision intelligence' across an entire company. It allows energy firms to see how a single change in production might affect logistics, pricing, and refining simultaneously.

A first for the energy sector

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) has signed an agreement to become the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier. This software platform is designed to help large organizations build and deploy fleets of AI agents that can coordinate complex workflows among different employees. The move represents a significant step in how industrial giants manage interconnected tasks.

The partnership was announced during the ADIPEC energy industry gathering in Abu Dhabi. It involves a collaboration between ADNOC, G42, AIQ, and Microsoft. These entities will work together to develop a bespoke decision intelligence capability that combines OpenAI's latest generation frontier models with the company's own industrial data.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy that already includes more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases. By integrating these tools, ADNOC aims to move faster and operate more efficiently across the entire energy value chain. The company intends to use these tools to make better decisions regarding production, processing, refining, logistics, sales, and trading.

From sequences to integration

Currently, many industrial decisions are made one after another in a sequence of separate studies. For example, field master planning often requires individual subsurface, facilities, and economic studies to be completed independently. ADNOC plans to use OpenAI Frontier to transform this into a single, integrated decision process where all factors are considered at once.

The company already uses a system called ENERGYai, which was trained on over 50 years of ADNOC data. While ENERGYai provides deep intelligence about specific reservoirs and assets, OpenAI Frontier will connect that intelligence across the entire business. This allows the company to weigh the commercial and operational impacts of every decision as one unified process.

The goal is to optimize the whole field at once rather than optimizing each reservoir or facility on its own. By using advanced reasoning models, the company can integrate decades of data from thousands of wells and hundreds of surface facilities. This approach allows them to prepare and optimize full-field development master plans at a scale and depth that was previously difficult to achieve.

How the technology works

The new system relies on interconnected AI agents that can continuously forecast various market factors. These agents will monitor crude oil supply, demand, prices, and margins to predict impacts before they actually occur. By doing this, the company can see how a change in one area might ripple through the rest of the organization.

To ensure the technology works within the specific needs of the company, it will be deployed on G42's sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE. Sovereign infrastructure refers to computing resources that are located and managed within a specific country's borders. This setup helps maintain control over where the data is processed and stored.

Data security is a primary focus of the agreement, as the company handles sensitive industrial information. All solutions will operate under the oversight of ADNOC to ensure that proprietary data and critical infrastructure remain protected. Human experts will also retain oversight of all consequential decisions, ensuring that the AI serves as a tool for human leaders rather than a replacement for them.

Security and infrastructure

Beyond the primary goal of operational decision-making, the agreement includes a specific focus on digital safety. ADNOC will deploy OpenAI's Daybreak Blue initiative to assist its cyber-security teams. This tool is designed to help identify vulnerabilities within the company's digital systems, protecting them from external threats.

The integration of these tools is meant to create a cohesive environment where different systems, data, and priorities are no longer siloed. Often, decisions in the energy sector rely on disconnected information, which can slow down the response to market changes. By connecting these points, the company hopes to create a more fluid flow of information from production to sales.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that the partnership combines frontier AI with sovereign infrastructure and industry expertise. He stated that this first-of-its-kind partnership will help ADNOC move faster and operate more efficiently. The project serves as a milestone in the company's ongoing efforts to digitize and automate its core industrial processes.
