01.AI takes state funding and moves its headquarters to DeepSeek's home city
Chinese AI company 01.AI is raising hundreds of millions of yuan from Hangzhou's state investors and relocating, as it shifts from frontier models to enterprise AI.
The short version
- City and district state-owned funds are jointly investing hundreds of millions of yuan in 01.AI.
- The headquarters moves to Hangzhou's Linping District, set up as an industrial AI transformation base.
- 01.AI has shifted from frontier model research to putting AI into company operations.
- Its platform links company data, knowledge and workflows to teams of AI agents.
- Hangzhou also hosts DeepSeek and Alibaba, and wants to become a national AI hub.
Why it matters
A company once judged by its models is now judged by whether businesses use its AI, and local governments are helping fund that. If you build on Chinese models, the vendor's focus and funding affect how many new releases you can expect.
What was announced
As Phoenix Tech (iFeng Tech) reported, 01.AI has agreed a partnership with the city of Hangzhou and its Linping District. State-owned funds at both levels will invest together, putting in several hundred million yuan in total. The report does not give an exact figure or name individual investors.
The company's headquarters will be based in Linping, where it plans to build what it calls an industrial AI transformation base.
A company that changed direction
Dr. Kai-Fu Lee founded 01.AI in Beijing. It was one of the early Chinese firms nicknamed the "six little dragons" of large models. Its focus has since moved away from building frontier models and toward helping companies use AI in day-to-day management.
Tianyancha, a business-records platform, shows three funding rounds so far. The report notes that the two best-known rounds were never officially announced and came from media leaks.
What it sells to businesses
The company's Wance AI platform is built around an enterprise ontology, a structured map of a company's data, knowledge, processes and organization. Several AI agents, meaning programs that carry out tasks, work together on top of that map.
On the platform, 01.AI offers agent products for management decisions and business growth, including a "boss AI" and a "sales champion AI". It also places forward-deployed engineers, staff who work inside client companies, to turn business needs into working systems.
It already runs AI industry base projects in Neijiang, Sichuan, and in Wuhan. Abroad, it is working with Kazakhstan on a sovereign AI project, which includes the Kazakh-language model AlemLLM.
Why Hangzhou
Hangzhou is home to DeepSeek and Alibaba, and the city is pushing to become a leading national center for AI. Under the plan, the city supplies local industry settings to test in, while 01.AI supplies technology, products and delivery. The two sides want to try AI projects in management, production operations and supply chain coordination, and to find models that other firms can copy.
The report does not say what the move means for 01.AI's future model releases.
What to watch
- Who the investors are and the exact amount raised, which the report does not give.
- Whether 01.AI keeps releasing models while it focuses on enterprise products.
- Whether the Hangzhou projects produce AI deployments other companies can repeat.
Try it
If you deploy any Chinese open model, read its license text directly. A vendor's address or funding does not change those terms.
